“If its argument is flawed, then at least it’s an argument worth making.” This has been one of the comments made about the new film ‘the Road to Guantanamo’ by Michael Winterbottom. I couldn’t agree more; while the personages might not be the most accurate and capturing ever seen, the overall message of the movie is one of the most important ones seen in mainstream film for a long time! (in that respect somewhat similar to ‘V for Vendetta‘ .)
More than 500 prisoners have been held in US custody since September 2004. The majority of the persons captured haven’t been put before a judge and many don’t even know on which basis they’re held there. The US administration remains on the standpoint that it is ‘unclear’ which convention, declaration, or other form of law should protect the prisoner- if any. Any human logic will tell you that the conditions under which these people are held are despicable and plain wrong. Unfortunately, the Bush administration, whith Donnie Rumsfeld in front, posses no such human logic, and so Guantanamo continues to be home for people who might or might not have commited crimes when fighting American soldiers.
Conclusively, I am begging you to see this movie. As said, it will not be the epic or ‘hight cultural’ adventure of the year. You probably won’t see or hear things you didn’t already know. But the world, we, need to open our eyes to the devestating crimes commited by the Bush administration; and this movie is in many ways an eye-opener! The crimes of Bush are being commited in the name of ‘war on terror’. This war has, in many respects, become a war more on Human Rights than on terror. We need to stand up and for basic rights for every human on earth- Not standing up will be silence, and silence is what Mr. Bush and his coalition of the willings (including my own coward of a Prime Minister) needs in their shady war on our rights. To my American friends: I know you didn’t vote for him, but please do everything in your power to prevent one of his buddies to become elected in ‘08. To everyone else: We too have a responsibility! The Danish and British Prime Minister remain in power and the popular voice has been scaringly silent towards Blair and Fogh’s accept of how the ‘war’ is fought!
