First month…
So, first month of living and working in DC…
It is still rather surreal to walk in to Longworth building at the Capitol every morning along Congresswomen and men. I have been working with interesting stuff- mainly on International Relations, yeeha! Obviously, there is lots of work which is more trvial; opening mail, answering phones etc, but I really feel that I learn some from all of it!
Of course, there is a whole other side to this city and the Hill in particular, which is sort of part of the work, but then not really: the receptions and the energetic switching of business cards. I have been to a few receptions lately: the Congressional Soccer Caucus, Sesame Street reception, etc. However, the most impressive one was definetely one for the commemoration of the Hungarian freedom fight against Russia in ‘56. It had some pretty hot-shot speekers, topped by none other than Condi Rice. Chance had it I ‘met’ her again later this week at a hearing at the IR-committee. You can’t help but to be a little star struck when facing one of the most powerful persons in the world- whether you agree with her or not(!)
Yesterday, we attended a reception at the Danish embassy with a classical concert and hele svineriet! You find yourself talking to the under secretary of political affairs in a casual chit chat- again, you can’t help but to be struck by that! Also, we met the nice Danish interns and staffers at the embassy.
Today, my group of fellows met with the editor from Jyllands-posten, Flemming Rose, who was in charge of printing the cartoons. He is on ‘vacation’, but took time to have a VERY interesting discussion with the ten of us. I could write for hours on that subject..!! Veeeery complex in my opinion!
Bueno, aside from all that, I’m having a great time here in DC. Am enjoying meeting new people and learning new stuff every day. Am living with my good friends Sid, Julia and Michelle and we’re having a blast! Might be going to Philadelphia tomorrow.
I will try to keep this page updated from now on. Hopefully, some additional pictures will come up soon.
Thanks for passing by,
hope everyone everywhere is good!

Ps. to hose of you that worry: Don’t! I will not give in to fame and titles and suck up to power here. Remember: despite the awe, I’m here to work with Human Rights ![]()

Hello Jakob,
How wonderfull to be able to follow your adventures in the all-mighty city of D.C
I am so glad to hear that you keep true, and do not suck up for power - But then again how do you then change anything overthere? Is there a way? Well, with your look and charm I guess there is
I am really envious! Please sip a cocktail, shake some hands and do a difference on my behalf.
Wish you the best!

Hey come on Jakob! You can say you had Condi without comment, you say you met with the biggest and most powerful dick in the whole universe without comment - but you can’t say you talked to Flemming Rose without comment. He has put your country on the map like no other, probably freaked out a lot of your friends at home out by that act (for a variety of reasons), made your aunt want to pretend she was a German when she went on holiday to Rome - what did you think of him? Is he really the poor innocent defender of free speech he tries to make out in the article?
Enjoying your diary.
